Eclipse

So... first off... I finished New Moon this morning. And found it depressingly wonderful. This one hit a little too close to home for my optimal comfort level... but good writing should. Except for The Bridge to Terabithia... but that's another story.

Naturally, I moved nearly immediately into Eclipse. I am most excited about this one because... A) I know there will be a good, old-fashioned, smack-down at the end, and B) JASPER! But... being only on page 267... I've gotten to neither.

But, speaking of Jasper, a funny thought ran across my mind while reading today. Bella is immune to Edward's gift. And Aro's. And Jane's. And it is presumed that she is just immune to vampirical (I originally thought I made this word up and was super impressed. Unfortunately I was mistaken. It is an actual word I have no claim on. Bummer.) gifts in general. But not Jasper's.... Why is it that Jasper can affect her when NO other vampire can? (I guess I should probably include in this exception list that Alice's gift also seems unaffected by Bella's weird immunity... but since Alice doesn't DO things to people I don't really think it counts.) So my question to the Twilight universe... and Peter... is: Why Jasper? Is it just a simple oversight or is there some larger reasoning afoot that my limited time in Twilightland is able to detect? Perhaps there is no answer...

I also came to the conclusion that I read too fast for my own good. As my mother pointed out, this is a rather expensive habit I have... and if I continue to slam through 600 page books in nine hours... my measly paychecks will no longer be able to support my book habit and my need to eat food occasionally. Darn. One or the other will have to give. *Please not the books, please not the books.*

Food is overrated.

Eclipse is preceded by Twilight and New Moon and followed by Breaking Dawn. The Twilight Saga is written by Stephanie Meyers and published by Little, Brown and Company. I think I'm going to quit telling you where you can buy the books. I think it is safe to assume you are intelligent enough to know books come from book stores. But, if not - Barnes and Noble, Books-A-Million, etc.

  1. As posted on Stephanie Meyer's website:

"How come Alice and Jasper can affect Bella with their supernatural powers, but Edward and Aro and Jane can't?"

"This question comes up at every single signing! The answer is explained in Eclipse, but I'm going to tell you all anyway, just so there's less confusion."

"Bella has a very private mind. She can't be touched there. What Edward and Aro do is clearly a mental thing; Jane, also, works inside the head (Jane doesn't actually inflict pain on anyone's body, she just puts the illusion of pain inside her victim's head. It's a very effective form of torture). Conversely, what Jasper does is no illusion. He affects the physical body, slowing the pulse and upping the endorphin levels to calm someone, for example, or raising the pulse and pumping out the adrenalin to excite them. Alice, also, works outside the mind in the realm of possible realities. She doesn't see the thought process behind the decisions, just the outcomes."

    Got to love Steph!
