Born on a Blue Day

As promised, my last post for today. And it will be short. I spent the majority of the afternoon cutting out my fake money that I had laminated for my class. As such, I only got to read the first four or so chapters in Born on a Blue Day. I am reading this book at the request of my brother - it was a trade off. I'm reading this and he has promised to read the Hunger Games in exchange. I know - ridiculous. Why would anyone need convincing to read that book? But he's stubborn (I have no idea where he gets that from) and so the deal was struck.

So far I am totally mesmerized with this book. Written by an autistic savant, Born on a Blue Day is probably a one-of-a-kind book. He gives a detailed account of his life growing up and what numbers look and feel like to him. Absolutely astounding. At this point - remember I'm not very far along - I think I might read passages of the book to my students. He expresses math and numbers in a way I think gifted and advanced fifth graders would love and really understand. But, of course I need to finish reading it first.

Born on a Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant is written by Daniel Tammet and published by Free Press.
