The Essential 55

It's that time again! Well...for Muscogee County schools that is. That's right - the new school year is almost here! My official planning days start a week from tomorrow (8/3) and students will be sitting in my room in less than two weeks (8/8). So, naturally I'm getting geared up to get a great year rolling. If you don't know - I was moved last year to fifth grade and it was quite the transition I must admit. But this year - this year I have a greater arsenal of tools at my disposal and I'm pumped to get the year going!

My new tools include:
  1. At least one year of teaching fifth grade under my belt. It helps more than you can imagine to have some idea what to expect.
  2. A great group of kids I've already started to get to know.
  3. Peter and I will finally be teaching the same grade at the same time!!! YES!!!
  4. Ron Clark's The Essential 55. The greatest educator's "textbook" there is.
Thus my post today. Listen carefully - if you are an educator, go buy this book immediately. Then read it. If you are not an educator, I strongly recommend you get the book as well. Again, make sure you read it too. While the book talks about lessons and rules for students to help them become polite, respectful, gracious citizens - let's face it - that's something we all need. Parents - these are also great rules to implement at home.

My personal favorite is Rule #47. It is the rule that makes life and teaching fun. It is hysterical, pithy, thought-provoking, and just plain ole silly.

And if you want to know what it is - you will have to buy the book. HA!

The Essential 55 is written by award-winning teacher Ron Clark, who I've seen in person (and he doesn't look much like Matthew Perry at all), and it is published by Hyperion.
