NERDS

So, I totally meant to post yesterday and when I got into bed (after turning my computer off), I realized I hadn't. Dang. And now I'm realizing I'm not prepared to adequately post today because I don't have the actual book and therefore don't have the author name or publication information. I'll update with that stuff later. I guess I could look it up, but let's face it - I'm too lazy.

The reason I don't have the book with me is because I'm staying at my mom's tonight to take care of her dogs while she is having a sleep study. I'm having mine Monday night - so probably won't post that night either. One last thing before I talk about the book: some of you may know (or may have figured out) that I enjoy writing. I have been working on a novel series of my own recently. I've worked hard to make it original and interesting and I think the basic premise and titles are ready for a test run with an actual audience. I'm going to make a separate post for that in a minute, but please read it and give me some feedback - good, bad, ugly, pretty, whatever. I'm still trying to get a feel for the characters and plot and I think some other opinions would help.

So, today/yesterday's book is NERDS. First off - how excited was I about this title?! Very is the answer. Being a nerd, I was certainly excited about the title and the cover has kids with cool spy gear and I thought, hey, why not! I was pleasantly surprised. It is a wonderful novel for elementary school kids. The story follows Jackson Jones, star athlete, super popular, and within the first few chapters of the book - Braceface. With the braces come a decline in popularity, and the inevitable lumping with the nerds. BUT - these are no ordinary nerds. These are NERDS - members of the elite super spy team National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society. That's right. These nerds are talented, deadly, high-tech spies. How cool!

At it's heart, NERDS also deals with concepts of bullying, seeing past the outer exterior, and giving people a second chance. A totally fun read and a great suggestion for boys who might not "like" to read.

NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society is followed by NERDS: M is for Mama's Boy. The NERDS series is written by Michael Buckley and published by Amulet Books.
